Jon “Jack” McCall, also known as “Crooked Nose” or “Broken Nose Jack” was the man who murdered “Wild” Bill Hickok in Deadwood, Dakota Territory on August 2, 1876 . In what was widely considered a cowardly act, McCall shot Hickok from behind as he played poker at Nuttal and Mann’s Saloon. McCall was hung in Yankton, Dakota Territory for the murder on March 1, 1877.
The hanging spot of Jack McCall is commemorated with a marker and plaque located in the town of Yankton, South Dakota. The marker is directly across the street from a Walmart Parking Lot.
