Professional baseball player Carl William Mays (November 12, 1891 – April 4, 1971) died in El Cajon, California at age 79 and is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Mays was an American pitcher who played for four World Series champion teams. Mays is also unfortunately most remembered for throwing the pitch that fatally injured Ray Chapman of Cleveland Indians in 1920. Chapman is still the only Major League player to ever die as a result of an on-field injury. Mays expressed regret for the incident but did not feel guilt as he did not intentionally try to hit Chapman. He received some negative backlash for voicing his thoughts, including from players such as Ty Cobb.
