Alferd G. Packer of Colorado was a prospector and wilderness guide who confessed to cannibalism in 1874. Packer and five other men had traveled through the San Juan Mountains during a particularly harsh winter. Packer was the only one to reach civilization. The five bodies of his party members were found at the foot of Slumgullion Pass near Lake City, CO, where it was apparent they had been possibly murdered and definitely utilized as food.

A comedic and fabricated movie about Packer and his exploits entitled “Cannibal! The Musical!” written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame was released in 1993.

The Alferd Packer Massacre Site is located down the a series of windy switchbacks on the Silver Thread Byway from Slumgullion Summit, about two miles outside of Lake City, Colorado. There is a sign pointing to the actual spot, along with a plaque which memorializes the five victims.
